Racquetball vs. Squash: The Rules of Racquetball 

There are some similarities between the game of racquetball and the game of squash, and people often get these two games confused. Here are some things that you need to know about how racquetball works: 

  • Played on an enclosed 4-wall court 
  • You must hit the front wall with every shot, and the ceiling is in play 
  • The ball is large, hollow, and made of rubber 
  • The server must bounce the ball once before serving and the ceiling must not be contacted on the serve 
  • The ball can only bounce once before it is returned 
  • Only the server can score points, and a typical match is played to 15 points (with the winning team needing to win by at least 2 points)

Meanwhile, Squash is played a little differently: 

  • Smaller and narrower court of play compared to racquetball 
  • The ball must hit the front wall first 
  • The ceiling is out of play 
  • The ball is a small rubber ball and is generally kept very low to the ground 
  • The game is played to a score of 11 
  • Both of these games can be a lot of fun, but it is essential to understand the differences between the two before you take to the court to play either one.

The game of racquetball has gained a lot of popularity in recent years, and it is now easier than it ever used to be to find a facility that offers racquetball in the Lubbock area. Some places where you might consider playing include:

This is a local gym that also has some racquetball courts contained within it. You can generally find around 3 open racquetball courts at Zach's Club at any given time but be mindful of the fact that this game is getting quite popular, so you should book a court in advance if possible. 


Rhodes Perrin Recreation Center 

Located at Lubbock Christian University, the Rhodes Perrin Recreation Center offers options to the public even if those individuals aren't enrolled at the university. It is important to check with the facility ahead of time to make certain that you can drop in for a quick game of racquetball. They will give priority to students and student activities, but you might be able to get a game in if no one else is using it. 


Club4Fitness Centers 

There are often racquetball courts available at Club4Fitness Centers in Lubbock, but you will need to check with each location as it is a facility-by-facility situation. You will need to be a Club4Fitness member to enjoy these perks, but many people have found that even having access to racquetball courts alone is a reason to join in.
